28 Days Until the Primary Election (August 7th)
119 Days Until the General Election (November 6th)
Hi everyone! I know it's been kind of a while, but I wanted to provide an update on exactly what we have been up to, and why I haven't posted for a while! Let's start with this:
For better or worse, you guys finally get to see my face in a picture! Thankfully I took this before I looked like a tomato--it was very hot outside! Debbie has been walking doors, but I finally found a canvassing buddy, so we decided to go out for the first time this past Saturday. It's always a bit nerve-wracking right before a canvass, but once we got into the swing of things, we were having a good time! Most people weren't home, which is usually what happens, but at least they got a flier on their door (we're still waiting on those palm cards, but they should be out this week!). It was also challenging because we are targeting specific Democrats that we think will vote in the primary, so it isn't quite going door-to-door in the sense that we hit every house on the street. Due to the driving, it took us about 2 hours to hit 18 houses alone, but that's okay! Progress is progress.
SO WHAT'S NEXT?
Canvassing, phonebanking, and more canvassing, basically. We're getting the palm cards this week which will be great. We're heading pretty close into the home stretch for the primary, so we're trying to reach out to every Democrat possible to get them to vote. It isn't just Debbie's race that is contested; every Democrat across Kansas will be able to vote for our governor candidate!
Debbie and I are going to walk a lot of doors in the next week, and we have some lovely volunteers who have offered to make phone calls. If you want to help, it's never too late! Go to our volunteer page at the top to sign up!
A SIDENOTE ABOUT THE WHOLE DEMOCRAT THING...
Last night was our monthly meeting, and there was an extremely nice lady there who pointed out something important to me. She didn't understand why we were just targeting Democrats, since independent/unaffiliated voters make up more of our district. I explained to her that we weren't clear enough--we're certainly targeting Democrats before the primary, but we are of course not going to ignore Unaffiliated and even Republican voters in the period before the General election.
Debbie, as seen by her voting record, is not just all about the Democratic party. While her views on how to fix problems happen to mostly align with this party, when she is in the legislature, she is considering what is best for her constituents, not the Democratic party. We're very happy to be in a campaign in which we have bipartisan support. Even the voters who don't support us help us--they always teach us something. Debbie is always willing to listen to a differing opinion, as long as it is presented respectfully. The people of the 40th district, all people, are our main priority.
With that being said, it's time for me to print some more walk lists! I hope everyone had a fabulous Fourth of July, keep the comments respectful, and please feel free to contact me if you need anything!
